Thanksgiving Thankfulness

Happy thanksgiving everyone! Or at least to the Canadians.

It honour of thanksgiving, I am making a list of the things I am thankful for this year

Challenges: life without challenge is static. Life with challenges is, well, challenging. Yet worth it. My life has been full of challenges over the last year, and more specifically the last few months, and it has been hard, stressful, and exhausting. But I think I will, and have to some degree, look back over this time and be glad that I took it on.

Prayer: I have struggled with consistent prayer throughout my life. And that has changed. But I’ve seen the power of prayer, the difference that it can make. We are called to pray without ceasing. And though I do not succeed at that, I am striving towards that.

Friends: I am a bit of a loner and have very few friends who really know deep into my soul. But I am so thankful for the friends that I have. For the laughter I am able to have with them. For the coworkers who have become friends that understand this job. For family that have become some of the closest friends that I have.

Church: I absolutely love my church. It is amazing. And it brings me closer to God every Sunday. I am not as connected as I probably should be, I don’t have the relationships at church that would probably be benenficial for me, but when I am there I feel the presence of God. I feel moved and convicted. I feel filled and comforted. I feel like I belong.

I am thankful for a million other things too: family, a roof over my head, a steady job, trips and vacations, the promise for my future.

This week I am thankful for:

  • Pumpkin: I suppose this is a typical 20something white girl thing, but I can’t help it. Pumpkin everything! I’ve had a pumpkin spice latte and a pumpkin scone this week. Maybe tomorrow I’ll make pumpkin cookies….
  • Sunday school: I love kids. And the biggest downside of my job, is that I don’t get to see kids nearly enough. But twice a month I teach Sunday school, adorable 5 year olds, and it is amazing.
  • Family: I had a large, extended family gathering this week. They don’t happen every often but they are always fun. It is great to catch up with everyone and just chat and laugh.

This week I am thankful for:

  • Church: it had been a few weeks since I was at church as I was on vacation one week and teaching Sunday school another. But being in church, worshipping, praying, listening, it refills my soul. Makes me feel whole again. I need it like I need air to breathe.
  • Grandparents: I don’t get to spend a lot of time with my grandparents. There’s not even a good reason for that. But when I’m with them I’m reminded of a few things: they love completely. Each other and their children and their grandchildren. And it is unconditional. They have the power of prayer behind them. I can’t tell you how many times my grandparents have told me that they are praying for me and I know it’s true, without a doubt. And prayer is powerful.
  • Walks: I’ve been trying to get more active. And I’ll be real, I went for a grand total of one walk this week. But it was nice, nice to be outside in the sun, nice to get off the couch, nice to be active.

This week I am thankful for:

  • Art: this one is strange, not something I would have ever thought about before. But in trying to develop some self care ideas I came across this inner desire to draw. I’m not good at it but for me it’s about expressing what’s inside my mind, putting it on paper. It’s about connecting with God. I’m hoping I’ll continue this long term, but at least for this week I am thankful for this new desire.
  • Laughter: because laughter is the best medicine right? I had a good time with family, eating, drinking, and laughing.
  • Walks: again, this comes from my self care needs. I’ve realized I need to be more active. So I went for a walk when the weather was nice. Listened to some music. And enjoyed the feeling of being outside for no real reason.

This week I am thankful for:

  • Time off: I’m on vacation. For a whole week. It is AMAZING. Seriously. I need to take a vacation more often. Even if I’m really new to my new position, it had been too log since a vacation. It needs to happen regularly.
  • Beach days: call me weird, but I love the days that are 30 degrees (Celsius) where I can sit on the beach by a lake all day. And that’s what today was. It’s my happy place!
  • Wine: I mean who doesn’t like wine? I am on vacation in the wine capital of BC. Which basically means I drink a lot of wine.
  • Sister time: hanging out with my sister is great. Even better cause we have the same tastes and interests. And we are on vacation together!

This week I am thankful for:

  • Dairy Queen: I mean isn’t everyone? It’s so good. A wonderful treat
  • Alone time: because I need it sometimes. All by myself in my house. It is peaceful.
  • Crafts: I’ve been feeling crafty lately. So this week I painted, and crafted, and now I’m newly organized!
  • Starbucks: I usually get a lot of Starbucks. All the time. But not lately. This week I got my first one in a while. It was delicious.

This week I am thankful for:

  • Long weekends: this weekend I had 4 days off. And it was fantastic. I was busy. But good busy. And a good mix of busy and relaxation.
  • Sunshine: who doesn’t love sunshine?! Seriously. It makes me happy. Reading outside. Just hanging out. It’s wonderful.
  • Family: family who are also friends, to be more specific. My family is also some of my best friends. Laughing, drinking, and hanging out together…it’s great!
